The arcade ports of the games i mentioned are worth it because they're much better on Saturn thanks to additional exclusive content, some reworked graphics, etc.

Back in the early/mid 90s people used them to watch Video CD's, just like the Philips CD-i (even the 3DO and PS1 had VCD add-ons). I personally wouldn't rush out to buy one unless you collect old VCD movies. My Victor V-Saturn came with one already installed and the Hitachi Hi-Saturn usually comes with it too.

From what I saw, it is used to transfer saves from the ss_bup.bin file, which is a copy of the Saturn's internal memory, to the ss_mems.bin, which is the 8MB cartridge emulated by Saroo, creating a slot in the ss_save that simulates the Saturn's internal memory.

Put the Beetle Saturn core and my actual Saturn in comparison on the same TV and the only way I'd be able to tell the difference is because I'd made the setup.

On the latter, the image quality is very stable. The ps1 version runs at roughly half the frame rate overall compared to the Saturn version.
