The main station consists of ten island platforms serving twenty tracks, raised above street level and running in a north–south direction. The main concourse runs east–west below the platforms. The Shinkansen lines are on the Yaesu side of the station, along with a multi-storey Daimaru department store.

Although it may be difficult to understand due to the station’s large area, many stores, and great flows of people, the structure of Tokyo Station is very simple, with the four directions made clear. The Marunouchi side is to the west and the Yaesu side to the east, each with a North Exit, Central Exit, and South Exit.

More than ten ticket gates serve as the entrances and exits to the station. T hose to the east are called Yaesu, those to the west, Marunouchi. Access to the Shinkansen trains is on the Yaesu side. The ground floor level of Tokyo Station houses 20 train tracks at ten platforms.
