The College of Saint Rose was founded in 1920 by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet as a Catholic college for women in Albany, New York. From its first graduating class of 19 women in 1924, more than 50,000 students have graduated from the College in the past 100 years.

On September 22, 1920, the College of Saint Rose—named for the first saint canonized in the Americas, St. Rose of Lima—opened with 19 students and an eight-member faculty. A single building housed classrooms, a dining hall, a chapel, a parlor, and a library.

On November 30, 2023, the Board of Trustees of the College of Saint Rose voted to cease academic instruction after the end of the 2023-2024 academic year. The anticipated last date of instruction at The College of Saint Rose will be June 21, 2024.
