GER kills Diavolo. That's the cause, and the effect is that Diavolo dies. However, by removing the effect from the cause, GER is able to kill Diavolo without him dying. So, Diavolo is trapped in a state where he should be dead, but cannot be. Similarly, since he was killed, he cannot be alive.
