The hawk head is usually thinner & lighter weight than a hatchet head. The handle is usually removable (friction fit), and can be easily made if one breaks.

I have a fiberglass handled HF hatchet that has done all that and more for 10 years now! Get the profile thin and the edge sharp and you will amaze yourself. A tomahawk will work, but probably harder to get the hang of.
