Mara Salvatrucha 13, or MS-13, is a transnational, mainly Hispanic, street gang notorious for its adherence to a methodology of extreme violence to enforce fear and establish street credibility.

Mara Salvatrucha of MS 13 is an international criminal gang which originates in Los Angeles, California and then spread to many other parts including US, Canada, Central America and Mexico. Central Americans form the majority of the gang members.

In 2002, several high-ranking MS-13 members began establishing the Ranfla Nacional, the gang's "command and control structure", which has directed acts of violence and murders in El Salvador and the United States.

According to the National Gang Intelligence center, MS-13 is a national and international criminal organization with more than 30,000 members in the world, and more than 10,000 in the United States. They regularly conduct gang activities in at least forty states and the District of Columbia.
