HMS Resolution was a sloop of the Royal Navy, a converted merchant collier purchased by the Navy and adapted, in which Captain James Cook made his second and third voyages of exploration in the Pacific. She impressed him enough that he called her "the ship of my choice", and "the fittest for service of any I have seen".

His journal states he was joined by the Sylphide and her prize the Resolution, a ship made famous by the voyages of Captain Cook. After the action at Negapostam, the Resolution was sent to Manila for wood, biscuit and rigging, and to enter any seaman she found there.

In 1772, Cook captained the HMS Resolution on a voyage to find land mass in the southern seas, sailing alongside Captain Charles Clerke on the HMS Discovery. Cook was accompanied by the naturalists Johann Reinhold Forster and his son Georg.

On 10 November 1800 Captain Peter Halkett of HMS Apollo captured the Spanish sloop of war Resolution in the West Indies. She was armed with 18 guns and had a crew of 149 men, under the command of Don Francisco Darrichena. Halkett reported that she was the former British navy cutter Resolution.

The bulk of the book (approximately 660 pages) comprises a facsimile reproduction of the British Library's copy of Cook's manuscript journal. The balance of the book (approximately 160 pages) comprises lengthy introductory essays and a closing essay, 'The Forsters' Fishes'.
