Opportunistic infections are the most common presenting clinical manifestations that ultimately lead to a diagnosis of AIDS (see Appendix E). The clinical recognition of these infections requires a high degree of suspicion, a familiarity with the many complexities of AIDS-related infections, and expert microbiological assistance.
