The main problem for the county’s timber industry was exhaustion of the resource base. Weyerhaeuser felled the last major stands of old-growth Douglas fir in southeast Thurston County, while the Mudd Bay and Mason Logging Companies cleared the Black Hills in the west county.

Along with Douglas fir, western hemlock and western red cedar cloak low foothills and mountains, giving way to Pacific silver fir around 4,000 feet and then to the smaller mountain hemlock and Alaska cedars found higher before rocks and glaciers cap the range.

Some of the finest of the remaining old-growth forests are within the proposed national monument. Stands of Douglas-fir around 1,000 years of age can be found in and around the Middle Santiam Wilderness, in Crabtree Valley, and in Millennium Grove near Gordon Meadows.
