Clive Smith (b. 1967, St. Albans, England) lives and works in New York, NY. Smith is a highly trained British painter interested in how contemporary painting can speak to modern societal issues. For two decades Smith primarily focused on portraits, including self-portraits.

By combining an existing bird, and mixing it with the DNA of a painting I wanted to create an entirely new, and wonderful subspecies. I have engineered these new breeds by thinking about how a certain birds' patterning and color could match the DNA of a specific painting. There is an interesting correlation between brush-strokes and feathers.

I can then represent this object through the luscious application of paint, color and pattern in the readymade shapes, blurring the lines between realism and abstraction, Fine Art and Applied Art.
