A variety of small classes of diesel locomotives have operated on railways in Northern Ireland. From 2001, most items of rolling stock in use on NIR had 8000 added to their number so as to be part of the Translink number series, which also incorporates their road vehicles.

The Córas Iompair Éireann / Iarnród Éireann 071 Class or Northern Ireland Railways 110 Class or Serbian Railways JŽ series 666 is a General Motors Electro-Motive Division EMD JT22CW series diesel–electric locomotive used in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Serbia.

The 001 Class locomotive was the backbone of mainline passenger and freight train services on the Irish railway network for forty years from 1955 until the mid-1990s when they were replaced by the new 201 Class.

Accordingly, CIÉ placed orders for over 100 diesel locomotives and parts for a further nineteen which were to be built at Inchicore Works. The bulk of the order, 94 locomotives, was placed with a consortium of four English companies, representing at that time a British record order for diesel-electric locomotives.

January 2025 marks an important anniversary in the history of Irish transport, for it is now 75 years since CIÉ’s first mainline diesel locomotive was completed in Dublin’s Inchicore Works. This was C2a class locomotive 1100, a Bo-Bo locomotive powered by a Sulzer unit.
