Milwaukee County has seen by far the steepest population decline of any Wisconsin county in the 2020s. Between April 2020 and July 2023, the county lost 23,266 residents, a 2.5% loss.
However, this demographic shift will not affect all 72 counties equally. Milwaukee County, for instance, is projected to lose nearly 10% of its population, while Dane County is poised for a 38% surge.
According to the report, most Wisconsin counties will face a declining population by 2050. In total, it's a projected loss of nearly 200,000 people in the next three decades.
