The only state abbreviation that has changed since 1963 is Nebraska’s. It had been NB but in 1969, it became NE to avoid confusion with another NB — the province of New Brunswick, Canada.

The population is spread out among 3.8 million square miles across 50 states, yet nearly one-third of Americans live in just three states: California, Texas and New York.
