Virginia Beach has joined the growing list of localities across Hampton Roads and Virginia to implement speed cameras in school zones after City Council last Tuesday approved the measure.
Under state law, cities and counties can implement red-light cameras at one intersection for every 10,000 residents. Suffolk’s population is more than 94,000, according to the 2020 census.
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Across the seven cities, school zone speed cameras can be found in areas like Chesapeake, Suffolk, and Norfolk, and could be coming to Virginia Beach.
The Chesapeake Police Department announced Thursday its plans to install up to 12 speed cameras in school zones across the city in an effort to discourage speeders and increase safety.
Under “Operation Safe School Zone,” police will be patrolling in marked and unmarked cars to target speeding, tailgating, school-bus passing and junior driver’s license violations.
