The governor said that banning candy and soft drinks from the SNAP program will help reform the state's food state program and that she believes it will "encourage" families to eat better.

In an already food insecure state, when thieves take advantage of Arkansas families using SNAP, Franklin said families feel this impact.

Arkansas has submitted a waiver to ban some food from Arkansas' Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The waiver would remove soft drinks and candy from SNAP food stamp benefits.

The association believes that removing sugary drinks from SNAP could lead to better health outcomes, including a reduction in heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

Among the most food insecure populations in Arkansas, the Marshallese have been denied access to SNAP benefits for decades.
