Esau Freeman was born in Wichita, Kansas. Freeman earned a high school diploma from Rose Hill High School and a bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University.

Esau rose to prominence in the turbulent 1970s as a student at the University of the Western Cape which had been infamously dubbed as "Bush University".
