Yount needed two hits Tuesday night to become the 17th member of baseball`s exclusive 3,000-hit club. He singled in the first inning for hit No. 2,999 but failed four times to register No. 3,000.

Yount played one more season after joining the 3,000-hit club, retiring after the 1993 campaign. He finished with 3,142 hits (18th on the all-time list), including 251 home runs.
