Rand McNally & Co., the venerable Skokie firm best known around the world for its maps, over the last three years has been quietly making headway in the wild and woolly business of retailing.

Andrew McNally III, who led Rand McNally & Co., one of the world's best-known map makers, through its largest period of 20th century growth, died Thursday in Chicago.
