Identified as a snailfish of the genus Pseudoliparis, the fish resembles a ghoulishly large tadpole, the outlet further said in its report.

A few days after the snailfish was captured on camera, researchers collected two other Pseudoliparis belyaevi snailfish from a depth of 8,022 meters in the Japan trench.

These snailfish named Pseudoliparis belyaevi are believed to be the first fish collected from depths greater than 26,000 feet and have only ever been seen at a depth of 25,272 feet back in 2008.

The unknown snailfish species, of the genus Pseudoliparis, was recorded swimming in the Izu-Ogasawara Trench at a depth of 8,336 meters — or more than 27,000 feet down.
