Betts will bat leadoff, moving Shohei Ohtani to the No. 2 spot in the batting order. Ohtani has hit in the leadoff spot for all of the Dodgers' previous 97 games this season. However, manager Dave Roberts says this is a temporary move for Betts, who last batted leadoff in June 2024.
The struggling shortstop has a long history batting leadoff, which he will do against left-handed pitchers, and Ohtani will be at the top against right-handers in the short term.
Manager Dave Roberts made the decision to leave Mookie Betts out of the starting lineup for Saturday night's 8-7 loss to the Brewers, giving the starting shortstop an opportunity to reset amid a season-long scuffle at the plate.

Betts is having the worst offensive season of his career. Manager Dave Roberts said he’ll likely return Sunday, but his status will be evaluated “day-to-day” as he works to turn things

It also marked the second time in a month Roberts has sat a healthy Betts, hoping a day’s respite from playing would recalibrate things. He sat in the Dodgers’ win over the Chicago White Sox on July 1, with the team hoping to give him a mental breather.
“In either scenario, a move would allow Betts to return to the outfield, which solves two problems at once. The Dodgers could elect to solve this problem in-house by benching Michael Conforto, moving Betts to right field, and having Miguel Rojas platoon with Hyeseong Kim at shortstop,” they wrote.
