Michael Collins — the “forgotten astronaut” aboard the first spaceflight ever to land humans on the moon — died Wednesday after a battle with cancer, his family announced. He was 90.

Michael Collins may not be a household name like his fellow Apollo 11 crewmembers Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, but he played a pivotal role in the success of the epic mission.

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Michael Collins, the NASA astronaut and retired Air Force general who piloted Apollo 11's mission to the moon, died early Wednesday, according to a statement from his family.

His name is Michael Collins, and he's often considered the forgotten astronaut. The mission was ripe for three men: two would walk on the moon and one would not.
