A black willow in Taos has held the national crown for its species since 2010. It is one of four national champion trees in New Mexico.

The willow oak is a tidy tree when it drops its leaves in the fall. The leaves are long and slender, about 3 or 4 inches long and only about one-half to 1 inch wide.
