Read’s lawyers again asked Judge Beverly Cannone to issue a finding of not guilty before the case even gets to the jury.
Read's lawyers say John O’Keefe was beaten, bitten by a dog, then left outside a home in Canton in a conspiracy orchestrated by the police that included planting evidence against Read.

DEDHAM, Mass. — Attorneys in Karen Read’s murder retrial met with Norfolk Superior Court Judge Beverly Cannone on Thursday to discuss instructions for the jury ahead of closing arguments.
Without the jury in the room, prosecutors and Read’s defense will convene for a charge conference starting at 10 a.m. — the final time lawyers will be able to argue procedural issues before delivering their closing arguments. At the conference, lawyers for both sides will present their proposed jury instructions to Judge Beverly Cannone.
Karen Read's defense presents expert testimony that Officer O'Keefe's fatal injuries resulted from falling backward, with facial wounds caused by a separate impact.
