What were the chances Jose Polanco would graduate from high school, let alone become a doctor? The odds sure had to be long for an immigrant kid from a city neighborhood scarred by the crack epidemic.

Jose Polanco, 53, of Cranston, is a beneficiary. He was diagnosed with rectal cancer in August of 2021. "I had done all the treatment for my rectal cancer," recalled Polanco.
