Hugo originated from a cluster of storms that moved off the African coast on Sept. 9, 1989. By the morning of Sept. 10, the system was classified as a tropical depression.

Hurricane Hugo, a Category 4 storm with winds of 135 to 140 mph, struck Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, on Sept. 22, 1989, causing significant damage as it moved through North Carolina.
