Scientists from Newcastle University tested crustaceans at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, known as Challenger Deep. At 10,890 metres below sea level it is the remotest part of the world’s oceans.
The team, including Newcastle University scientists, deployed free-falling landers to sample the sparse deep-sea creatures around cameras and traps with bait.
Dr Chester is a sound studies scholar for the University of Sydney who uses specialised microphones in the ocean and deep underneath sand dunes to capture sounds of the sea.
