While the first quake occurred along the San Andreas Fault, the second struck inland, near the Hayward and Calaveras faults, areas known for being susceptible to stress transfers.

KTVU meteorologist Mark Tamayo looks at each fault in the Bay Area, including the San Andreas and Calaveras, and the region's long earthquake history.

In contrast, the nearby Hayward and Calaveras Faults, which branch off the San Andreas and run roughly parallel to it, have serpentinite on them but are creeping, as would be expected.

It was also due east of the south San Jose area, a review of the USGS map shows. The quake epicenter was located in the central section of the Calaveras Fault, according to the USGS.

Others have suggested it connects to the Maacama Fault on the north and the Franklin and Calaveras faults on the south, though Philibosian said any such connections are not yet clear.

It appears the quake hit along the Calaveras Fault which is the same fault line where a 5.1 quake struck in October. It was the strongest earthquake to hit the Bay Area in eight years.
