President Donald Trump said he would place 25% tariffs on all cars and certain car parts made outside of the U.S., a much wider net than auto makers had expected. The levies will go into effect on April 2.

Foreign leaders were quick to criticize the tariffs, a sign that Trump could be intensifying a broader trade war that could damage growth worldwide.

About 22% of all vehicles sold in the U.S. are imported from Canada and Mexico, according to S&P Global, while several automakers rely on assembly and manufacturing for some vehicles in either country, including BMW, U.S.-based General Motors, Nissan, Volkswagen, Toyota and Stellantis, among others.
