The review prompted the EMA committee to recommend updating the product information on ambroxol- and bromhexine-containing medicines to include a small risk for severe allergic reactions.

The drug, Ambroxol - which comes in both pill and syrup form - is already used to ease coughing by clearing away mucus in the lungs of patients with respiratory diseases.
