(RNS) — The kickbacks came from the sale of Black churches in New York, some of which had been in distress. Church leaders hid the transactions from church members and state officials.

In the 80 years that Mt. Pisgah African Methodist Episcopal Church has existed in Jersey City, the congregation of nearly 600 has always recognized its important role in helping the community.
