At the very top of the 1.4-litre Golf line-up sits the R-Line. You don’t get any extra performance, as the R-Line stays with the same turbocharged four-cylinder engine with its 110kW and 250Nm.

Only two engines are available on the Golf R-Line, both producing 150 horsepower. The cheapest model in the range comes with a 1.4-liter turbo TSI, pushing 150 PS through a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Equally noteworthy was the 1.4 TSI unit’s fuel consumption. On our standardised fuel route, the Golf returned an average of 6.7 L/100 km; just 0.4 L/100 km more than Volkswagen’s claim.
