In an effort to protect Republicans’ House seats in the 2026 midterms, Donald Trump’s White House is aggressively pushing for redistricting in Texas that would allow the GOP to pick up five additional seats in the state.

Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic leader, told Texas Democrats on a call on Tuesday that the moment required everyone to take extraordinary actions.

Redistricting is one of 18 items on the agenda during the Texas legislative special session that begins July 21.

More eager to play ball is California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has been floating an equal and opposite redistricting response in light of Texas’ proposed moves. “Two can play this game,” Newsom, a widely speculated 2028 hopeful, wrote on X today.

The gang is joined by Kareem Crayton, from the Brennan Center for Justice, to discuss Texas’ mid-decade redistricting effort.

Crockett said Republicans, backed by Trump, are "blatantly" trying to "dilute minority voices" with the redrawing of its congressional map.
