When Juan Soto logs career hit No. 1,000, the New York Mets superstar will match an achievement only seen from Mickey Mantle and Mel Ott across all of MLB history.

Just two accumulated 1,000 hits, 200 homers and 700 walks. New York Giants right fielder Mel Ott was the first. New York Yankees center fielder Mickey Mantle would later join him. Soto is the first with more than 800 walks. (He's earned 830 free passes.)

It didn't take long for Juan Soto to make history on Thursday night. The star outfielder lined a two out single off Braves right-hander Spencer Strider in the top of the first -- giving him 1,000 hits in his big-league career.

Blade Tidwell, the Mets’ top pitching prospect, started on the mound and allowed four runs in under four innings. Though his command wavered, the loss was hardly his alone. The bullpen followed with a disastrous outing, surrendering six additional runs as the game slipped into blowout territory.

The team built on its surprising playoff success from last year by handing out the largest contract in baseball history to Juan Soto, and it paid top dollar for other win-now additions like Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas.
