Ohio is refurbishing the Black Horse Inn for the new Belmont County Underground Railroad Museum, supported by a $4M Appalachian Community Grant. The project aims to boost local tourism and education.

MORRISTOWN, Ohio — A groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday marked a significant step forward for the Black Horse Inn, which is set to become the new home of the Underground Railroad Museum.

Several places across the Mid-Ohio Valley are open as a cooling shelter.

Residents were able to tour some of the historical sites that housed freed slaves during the 1800s.

Dr. Childs noted that there is still much history to uncover, with researchers continually discovering new sites on the Underground Railroad throughout the Tri-State area.

A new apartment building and meeting space was erected and completed next door to the church in 2023. It was a station on the Underground Railroad.

The main house is also the only private residence in the county listed on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
