HDMI Alt Mode allows HDMI video to pass along a USB-C cable dongle-free.

A simple USB-C-to-HDMI cable will replace the $70 dongles that currently exist, though the source device will need to have been designed to output HDMI via USB-C.

But while the latest Raspberry Pi Zero model has micro USB and mini HDMI ports, Sipeed’s Pi3H has full-sized USB and HDMI ports… and even a full-sized RJ45 port for Gigabit Ethernet.

Regardless, if the Google TV Streamer ends up having more than HDMI with 1-2 USB-C ports and Ethernet, Google is taking full advantage of the non-dongle form factor.
