VATICAN CITY — The nearly 400-year-old sculpted canopy towering over the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica will be surrounded by scaffolding for most of 2024 as it is washed, repaired and restored.

The traditional altars, elaborately decorated with food, will be displayed in churches, homes and businesses in honor of St. Joseph’s Day.

The tradition of the St. Joseph’s Altar came to New Orleans with the Sicilian immigrants. The tradition was born out of an experience of famine on the island.
