Santel’s career comes on the heels of an adolescence spent overweight. As a fifth-grader, he weighed 205 pounds. He hit 346 pounds in high school, where he played football as a lineman.

Santel says he began eating professionally in 2010, after winning a national body transformation contest. To celebrate, he and a buddy devoured a 28 pound pizza in St. Louis, winning a $500 prize.
