The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is investigating the fatal shooting of a suspect by a San Diego Police Department officer in downtown San Diego.

The shooting happened near the Santa Fe Depot at about 8:50 p.m., according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the shooting under a county-wide memorandum that prevents law enforcement agencies from investigating incidents involving their own officers.

A suspect was shot dead by police in downtown San Diego Tuesday night after gunfire erupted near an MTS Trolley platform, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office confirmed.
