Unlike other Basin and Range parks protected by the National Park Service, the 704,000 acres of the Basin and Range National Monument are administered by the Bureau of Land Management.

In some places, the Sierra Nevada is made up of smaller mountain ranges that splinter off the main crest, like long fingers pointing toward the sagebrush-studded deserts of the Great Basin.
