The USNS Harvey Milk is being renamed the USNS Oscar V. Peterson in honor of a Navy chief watertender who died in World War II.

Heading into Pride Weekend, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the new name of the Navy ship previously named after LGBTQ rights hero Harvey Milk.

The U.S. Navy renamed the USNS Harvey Milk to the Oscar V. Peterson in an effort to take the "politics out of ship naming," SecDef Pete Hegseth said.

The ship was earlier named after Harvey Milk, a US Navy veteran and one of the country’s first openly gay elected officials.
