On Jan. 3, 1749, New Hampshire Gov. Benning Wentworth issued his first grant for a town in what we know today as Vermont but during the mid-1700s was widely known as the New Hampshire Grants.

According to this map, northern corners of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine could see an earlier peak in late September, while Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts will peak later in October.
