This is the second time USA TODAY readers have honored the Au Sable for its fly fishing. In 2024's USA TODAY's 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards, the Au Sable River also was No. 1 in the the U.S.

The Madison River coming out of Yellowstone National Park is close to its all-time low, marked in 1931, and less than half what it typically is mid-June.

Fishing contests abound for adults and kids. The opening of the regular black bass season, as well as Great Lakes muskellunge, is Sunday. The huge Southtowns walleye contest ends on Sunday.
