The absolute magnitude of a star, then, is how bright it would be from a standardized distance of 10 parsecs (32.6 light-years).
Absolute magnitude is the magnitude the star would appear to be if it was located a distance of 10 parsecs, or about 33 light years, away from the solar system.
So any object closer than 32.6 light-years has an apparent magnitude brighter than its absolute magnitude. For any object farther away, the absolute magnitude is brightest.
