Gir National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary is the last abode to the surviving population of the Asiatic Lion in the wild. The park comprises 1412 sq. km of deciduous forest.

The sanctuary was expanded to cover peripheral forests, and the core area named Gir National Park. Today, the Gir covers a 545 square-mile area of deciduous forest, thorn forest and savannah.
