Former RTÉ newscaster, journalist and presenter Don Cockburn has died aged 87. He joined RTÉ as a part-time Raidió Éireann announcer in 1958, before becoming a full-time employee in 1972.

He retired finally in December 1992. Current managing director of RTÉ News Jon Williams paid tribute to Cockburn, describing him as “one of RTÉ’s finest over many years”.
