Trooper Damon Allen, 41, died after being shot around 4 p.m. on Interstate 45 near Fairfield in Freestone County by a man later identified by police as Dabrett Black, 32, who then fled the scene.

Allen started on the force in 2002 and served 15 years before his death Thursday. The Texas Department of Public Safety described the 41-year-old from Mexia as a husband and father of three.
