NYPD Chief of Transportation Kim Royster said crash investigations are complicated, with officers required to have at least 10 years on the force and certain levels of expertise.

In 2019, the unit worked 349 cases leading to 110 arrests, officials said Wednesday. Proponents of the bill jumped on those numbers to argue that the 26-person squad is understaffed and ineffective.

NYPD data show roughly 25% of nearly 2,300 vehicle pursuits last year resulted in a crash, property damage or physical harm. Of those, 67% stemmed from a suspect fleeing a car stop by cops, data show.
