Green Screen tech, also known as chroma key or “keying,” is the process of placing a colored background behind you that the camera can then replace with anything you choose.

Green screen, or “chroma key compositing,” is a popular special-effects technique used to strip the background of a subject on video or film and replace it with another.

On Saturday morning at 10 a.m., the Chicago River will be dyed a shade of green similar to a chroma key screen, in a beloved St. Patrick's Day tradition that dates back to 1962.

One of the benefits of the chroma key colour being visible only on camera is that there's no spill, so there's no penalty to placing the talent close to the screen, which is useful in smaller rooms.
