On Friday night, less than a week after the Boston Red Sox shocked the baseball world by trading star Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, the two teams met to kick off a three-game weekend series.

Rafaela connected with a one-out drive over the wall in center against Sean Hjelle (1-1) to give Boston a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning. Rafaela also doubled and scored in the third and hit an RBI single in the fourth to help Boston win for the eighth time in nine games.

Facing his old team for the first time since they dealt him on Sunday, Rafael Devers went 0-for-5 on Friday as the Red Sox beat the Giants, 7-5, in the series opener. The night began with hugs for Devers and ended with a verbal altercation between Boston’s Aroldis Chapman and San Francisco’s Wilmer Flores.
