A temporary breakdown in the supplier's manufacturing process caused the problem to occur, and as the FDA alert makes clear, "people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product with the lot codes shown below."

Mellace Family Brands California, Inc. initiated the recall for its Wegmans Semi-Sweet Chocolate Nonpareils because it contained milk even though that ingredient was not mentioned on the packaging, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The Wegmans brand Semi–Sweet Chocolate Nonpareils were sold in the Rochester-based chain’s grocery stores in eight states — Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia — and Washington D.C. Nonpareils are a flat, rounded candy made of chocolate and covered with white sugar sprinkles.
